COGS By Item Group

Cost of goods sold per item group for a period, from GL Entry on expense accounts.

In detail

COGS By Item Group takes the cost of goods sold booked in the General Ledger for a period, every debit on accounts of type Cost of Goods Sold such as Cost of Goods Sold - YFF, and splits it across item groups in proportion to the sales of each group in the same period. It does not read the stock ledger; it allocates the GL total by the share of Sales Invoice item amounts per group, so the split is an estimate by product line, not an exact per item cost. It answers which lines earn and which only turn over. Groups with sales but no stock items also get a share, so read it with that in mind.

Formula

Group COGS = total COGS debits in the period x (group's sales amount / total sales amount)
