Dashboard number cards
Expenses
Total of all expense accounts this fiscal year, from GL Entry.
In detail
This card sums the debit balance of every account under the Expenses root of the chart, from Cost of Goods Sold to depreciation, for the current fiscal year. It is a custom function over GL Entry, so only submitted invoices and journals count. In the demo it includes purchases, overheads and depreciation of Rs 1,235.54 a month. Watch it against the Revenue card: when expenses climb faster than sales, margins are shrinking and it is time to look at the Expense Breakdown chart.
Formula
Expenses = Sum of (debit minus credit) on GL Entry for all accounts under the Expenses root, current fiscal year
How to record it in BRAccount
- 01Go to Financial Reports; the card is in the top row.
- 02Click the card to open General Ledger filtered to expense accounts for the year.
- 03To change the period, open the card menu > Edit and change the Fiscal Year filter.
- 04Sort the ledger by amount to see which bills drove the total.
- 05If an entry looks wrong, open the Purchase Invoice behind it and amend or cancel.
When to use it
Watch it against revenue; if it climbs faster, margins are shrinking.
Example from the demo books
