Accounting Dimension Filter

Limits which dimension values may post to which accounts. No ledger effect.

In detail

An Accounting Dimension Filter decides which values of a dimension are allowed, or required, on which accounts. For example, require Branch on every expense account so that no cost is posted without saying which branch it belongs to, or allow only certain projects on a revenue account. The filter runs when a document is saved and blocks it with a message, so it is a validation tool with no ledger effect. Without a filter a dimension is optional and reports built on it are incomplete. Use it once the dimension is understood by staff, otherwise it will stop legitimate postings.

How to record it in BRAccount

  1. 01Go to Invoicing > Accounting Dimension Filter > New.
  2. 02Pick the Accounting Dimension, for example Branch, and tick Disabled off.
  3. 03Add the accounts it applies to and the allowed dimension values.
  4. 04Tick Allow Or Restrict to choose whether listed values are allowed or blocked.
  5. 05Save. Documents on those accounts now require a permitted value before they can be submitted.

When to use it

Create under Accounts > Accounting Dimension Filter to make a dimension mandatory or restricted.

Example from the demo books

Require Branch on every expense account.
