Accounting Dimension

An extra tag like Cost Center that you define yourself (project, department, vehicle) and can filter reports by.

In detail

An accounting dimension is a tag you define yourself and that then appears as a field on every voucher and as a filter on every financial report, exactly as Cost Center does. Typical dimensions are Project, Department, Branch or Vehicle. Each is backed by a master you already have or create, and you can make it mandatory for certain account types so that, for example, every expense must name a project. The point is to answer questions like which trek lost money or which vehicle costs most without creating a separate account for each one. Add dimensions sparingly: each one is another field people must fill correctly, and reports filtered on a dimension only show rows that were tagged.

How to record it in BRAccount

  1. 01Go to Invoicing > Accounting Dimension and click New.
  2. 02Pick the Document Type the dimension is based on, such as Project or Department, and Save.
  3. 03Optionally tick Mandatory for Balance Sheet or Profit and Loss accounts for the company.
  4. 04Open any new Sales Invoice or Journal Entry; the dimension appears in the Accounting Dimensions section.
  5. 05Fill it on each row and Submit; then filter the General Ledger or Profit and Loss by that dimension.

When to use it

Add one when you need a breakdown the chart of accounts should not carry.

Example from the demo books

A Branch dimension lets the Koteshwor store read its own Profit and Loss.
